Addiction

Addiction to drugs, drinking, sex, gambling, or other substances can lead to long-lasting changes in the brain that impair thoughts, impulse control, and other behaviors. Over time, those with an addiction typically need more of their desired substance to experience the intense pleasure (or high) they crave, which can increase the severity of addiction.

Oftentimes, codependency issues develop among those with an addiction and their loved ones. Family members may ignore their own wellbeing or even develop self-destructive and impulsive behaviors themselves. Harming loved ones can lead to additional guilt and shame, making it even harder to overcome addiction even when you’re truly ready to quit.
